The Kenyan government has started work on a US$13.8bn railway project which will link the nation with Uganda, Rwanda and South Sudan, and enhance trade between the countries

According to AFP, the railway project has been partly funded by China, which loaned Kenya US$5.2bn for the venture.

The first 450km section of the railway connecting Mombasa with Nairobi, will be constructed by state-owned China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC). The project has been scheduled for completion in 2017.

The launch of the railway project in Kenya was attended by President Uhuru Kenyatta and China's ambassador to Kenya, Liu Guangyuan.

President Kenyatta said, “What we are doing here will most definitely transform the course of development for the eastern African region. As a result, east Africa would emerge as a competitive investment destination.”

Guangyuan said, “Kenya is stepping forward into the international limelight. This will be a landmark project both for Kenya and East Africa.”
