African Minerals is to lease an additional 14 locomotives from South African company RRL Grindrod for use in Sierra Leone
The 14 S30SCC Co-Co diesel locomotives will supplement the 20 African Minerals already leases from RRL Grindrod.
According to the International Rail Journal, the 2.24MW locomotives will be used to haul iron on the 200km line from the Tonkolili mine to the Atlantic port of Pepel.
The Tonkolili mine is expected to produce 15-20 million tonnes of iron per year.
Grindrod has also supplied locomotives to Congo Ocean Railway, and mining company, Vale, has also expressed an interest in using the S30SCC on Mozambique's new Sena line.
