Logistics giant DHL Express has revealed plans to expand its presence in Nigeria and increase investment in markets across sub-Saharan Africa
DHL Express sub-Saharan Africa managing director Charles Brewer said that Nigeria's GDP growth rate of close to seven per cent and its large population had made the country an attractive prospect for growth to the firm.
"The opportunity is for us to expand our footprint within the country and service semi-urban and rural areas so that anyone – from student to small business – could access our network and the over 220 countries and destinations that we serve," said Brewer.
DHL employs more than 450 people in Nigeria, where it has been operating since 1979. Britain accounts for 21 per cent of its Nigeria outbound business, with the US accounting for 16 per cent.
According to Brewer, the firm would target the large number of small and medium enterprises (SMEs) in Nigeria, which he said required “easy access and a team of highly-trained certified international specialists to lead them to the very obvious opportunities that trading with the world could present".
Brewer remarked that the company would use its base in Nigeria as a stepping stone for increased growth across the wider sub-Saharan African region.
"As we see the continent surge as a result of sector investment, increased consumer spending and economic activity, the future is still bright for the continent," Brewer added.
