Luxembourg-based cargo airline Cargolux has decided to increase cargo rates to Africa in an attempt to offset costs incurred to contain the spread of the Ebola virus

A spokesperson from the airline said that the new tariffs would be effective from 1 October 2014 and will apply to all Cargolux flights in and out of Africa. The costs would be levied on a per kg basis.

According to local reports, a majority of costs are due to double the number of crews being deployed on the flights, who will take turns to work in shifts. Crews have been instructed not to leave the flight deck during stopovers at African cities, in order to avoid contact with ground staff.

Cargolux is also considering equipping crews with protective clothing to prevent any risks of Ebola contamination. This special kit would be worn by crew members on landing at African airports and only removed just before take-off.
