General Electrics (GE) distributed power business has signed a US$61mn contract to supply eight GE TM2500+ aeroderivative gas turbine generators to Algeria
The company will also supply the first Jenbacher gas engine project to Plastpaper – an industrial plastic goods factory located at Oran in northwestern Algeria, said GE in a statement.
GE will provide the state-owned electricity utility Sonelgaz with the aeroderivative turbines on an expedited basis. The gas turbines will harness on-site power for a steady supply of electricity across the country.
Algeria’s power requirements are growing by 14 per cent annually, and will rise to 24GW by 2017 from the current total capacity of 12GW, said local reports. The government is focusing on using natural-gas fuelled on-site power technology, to address the country’s growing energy needs.
“The TM2500+ aeroderivative gas turbines will demonstrate how on-site power technology can help ensure the availability of electricity for municipal and industrial customers throughout Algeria,” said Lorraine Bolsinger, president of GE power and water distributed power.
The TM2500+ units are being installed in multiple locations near existing electrical substations across the country. They can operate on either gas or liquid fuel and will supply electricity to support peak demands and to increase grid reliability. It is available for 50Hz and 60Hz applications, reaches full power in 10 minutes or less, offers low emissions and has a small footprint for limited spaces, said GE officials.
