The Addis Ababa Water and Sewarage Authority (AAWSA) has said it will construct five water projects worth a total of US$251mn

Addis Ababa is currently facing a shortage in water supply. Officials from the AAWSA stated that the projects will begin by end of September 2014. Once completed, the projects would raise the potable water supply in the country to 599,000 cu/m from the current capacity of 350,000 cu/m.

Fekadu Zeleke, deputy general manager of AAWSA, revealed that two underground water projects at Akakai, each with a capacity to produce 70,000 cu/m of water per day, will begin operations in September 2014 and February 2015. Expansion of the Legedadi and Dire dam water projects as well as construction of Akakai Phase II would be finalised later this year.

The projects would allow AAWSA to supply an additional 88,000 cu/m of water into the system, added Zeleke. AAWSA is also sinking 20 water wells to produce 21,000 cu/m of water per day to areas that are facing an acute water shortage.
