South African steel products manufacturer Scaw Metals Group has partnered with the Guma Group and Jospong Group of Companies to construct a US$40mn grinding plant in Tema, Ghana

According to the Ghana Herald, the plant is expected to become fully operational in 18 months. It will have the capacity to grind 50,000 metric tonnes of metals per annum.

Scaw Metals produces chrome forged grinding media that are used in gold and copper industries. The company set up its regional sales office in Tema in 2011, which serves as its hub in West Africa.

Scaw Metals chief executive officer Markus Hannemann said, “We are delighted that we will be opening a plant in Ghana. The Ghanaian government has given great impetus to the local manufacturing industry to stimulate economic growth and provide job creation. From our experience in Ghana so far, we are certain that we will be able to fully utilise the vast potential in the region.”

Guma Group chairman Robert Gumede said, “Our investment showcases that partnerships between the private and public sector can aid infrastructure developments in Africa.”

Guma Group has interests spread across the energy, power generation, ICT, infrastructure development, tourism, real estate and retail sectors.

Ghana’s Jospong is a diversified group with interests in building and construction, printing and publishing, ICT, plant and equipment, automobiles and the oil and gas industries.
