Somalia and Eritrea have signed a joint declaration to restore diplomatic ties after a decade of animosity

This comes during the three-day visit of Somali President Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed to Asmara, the capital city of Eritrea.

The agreement follows the recent steps of the Horn of African countries to unfold brotherly relation which is crucial for the economic stability.

The visit aimed at deepening the peace process between the peoples of Eritrea and Somalia, recalling the fact that the peoples of Somalia and Eritrea have consistently evinced solidarity and provided support to each other’s aspirations for freedom, independence and progress.

The governments of Eritrea and Somalia have reached the following points of agreements:

– Somalia is endowed with a strategic location and vast human and natural resources. However, it has been hampered in realising its potential due to internal problems and external interventions. Thus, Eritrea strongly supports the political independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Somalia to restore the country’s rightful stature and to achieve the lofty aspirations of its people.

– Somalia and Eritrea will endeavour to forge intimate political, economic, social, cultural as well as defence and security cooperation.

– The two countries will establish diplomatic relations, exchange ambassadors, promote bilateral trade and investment and strengthen educational and cultural exchanges.

– Eritrea and Somalia will work in unison to foster regional peace, stability and economic integration.
