The government of Mauritius has laid out reforms to be implemented in public utility sectors from 2015 to 2019, especially in water, electricity and waste management

One of the major problems in the island nation is water supply and various measures have been defined to address the issue, stated government officials. This includes the renewal and replacement of pipes to reduce water loss and ensure steady water supply all year round.

Mobilisation of water resources as well as infrastructure including the renewal and replacement of pipes to reduce water loss are also being carried out. The Bagatelle Dam will be completed within a year and a new dam constructed at Rivière des Anguilles to improve water supply in the southern region of Mauritius, in addition to supplying technologically-advanced water treatment plants.

Provisions are also being made to increase the capacity of the La Nicolière reservoir to satisfy growing demand in the north, added government officials. They are also reviewing the most effective manner of wastewater disposal.

In the energy sector, the government is working to ensure Mauritius gets a steady and continuous supply of electricity. Measures include the power sector expansion plan, with projections on the country’s power use for the next decade. A renewable energy programme will also be launched.

The redevelopment of the St Louis Power Station would be implemented in the short term. As a medium term goal, the Mauritian government will encourage the mix of green energy and clean fossil fuel technology.
