Being elected as the new President of South Africa, Cyril Ramaphosa has vowed to tackle corruption and mismanagement in the country under his governance

Speaking to the press, he said, “I will try very hard not to disappoint the people of South Africa.” He further added that his government will deal with corruption with strict hand, noting that the government will work in collaboration with all parties together.

The 65-year old politician has been elected by jubilant ruling party legislators. In his speech, he said that his government will serve the country with “humility, faithfulness and dignity.”

The predecessor, Jacob Zuma resigned last Wednesday after discussions with ANC leaders who told him to step down or face a parliamentary motion of no confidence. Zuma government was alleged with several corruption scandals including ‘state capture,’ in which he allegedly fell under the influence of the wealthy Gupta brothers.

Speaking to the Guardian, Ramaphosa said, “Issues to do with corruption, issues of how we can straighten out our state-owned enterprises and how we deal with ‘state capture’ are issues that are on our radar screen.”

The alleged corruption charges in South Africa put the country’s business environment at stake in past few years, demeaning the credibility of the nation as a prospective investment destination to the international investors. With the new reign of Ramaphosa, South Africa aims to start afresh to develop its economy.

Mmusi Maimane, leader of the opposition Democratic Alliance, congratulated Ramaphosa and said that the party will cooperate with the government’s action against corruption to boost up economic prosperity in South Africa.
