World Bank Group member IFC is working with the Ghanaian chapter of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) to promote improved corporate governance practices in the West African nation, to help build more sustainable businesses and strengthen private sector growth

A workshop organised recently at the World Bank Group office detailed the role of company secretaries within the corporate governance framework. The programme introduced participants to IFC’s Corporate Secretary Toolkit, which helps practitioners understand their roles as governance professionals.

Norman Williams, portfolio head for East and West Africa at ACCA, said, “ACCA is committed to helping institutions develop capacity to establish good corporate governance culture that will help them perform better, attract more capital and increase their profitability. We are working with IFC to help achieve our goal and support Ghanaian businesses.”

Chinyere Almona, head of the Africa corporate governance advisory programme for IFC, said, “IFC works with companies to help them adopt good corporate governance practices, which contribute to sustainable economic development. Partnering with ACCA will help us support companies to implement corporate governance practices, improve their productivity and contribute to economic development in Ghana’s economy.”

IFC Africa’s corporate governance programme aims to improve the performance of businesses by helping them adopt good corporate governance practices and standards that are adapted to regional priorities. Improved corporate governance helps businesses attract and retain investment, among other benefits.
