The World Future Energy Summit (WFES), hosted by Masdar at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre from 16-18 April, is being delivered with a bid to accelerate the progress made at COP28 last year

At COP28, which was held in Dubai, the ‘UAE Consensus’ was formed, which set out the actions required to keep the 1.5°C target within reach. This included a reference to transitioning away from all fossil fuels in energy systems to enable the world to reach net zero by 2050; encouraging parties to accelerate emissions reduction targets in their national determined contributions; offers of a new target in tripling renewables and doubling energy efficiency by 2030; recognition of the need to significantly scale adaption finance beyond doubling; and a call to build momentum towards reform of the global financial architecture.

This ambitious concord will be in sharp focus at WFES with a series of keynote addresses, panel discussions, fireside chats and case studies all aiming to accelerate outcomes through pathways for a myriad of sectors including tourism, manufacturing, aviation, investment, agriculture, utilities, construction, transport, healthcare and, of course, energy.

“COP28 has laid down the mandates; the task now is how public and private sectors react and partner up to implement solutions which will achieve the objectives,” said Leen AlSebai, show director of WFES. “The task is cross-sector and multi-channel, which is why the Climate and Environment Conference takes a comprehensive approach to sector examination.”

Highlights include a fireside talk with representatives Arabian Gulf Steel Industries, Talabat, and Zero Carbon Ventures, who will look to foster innovation in carbon abatement and deep dive into the technology and innovation pathways to reduce CO2 levels.

Melissa Tan, CEO of Wah & Hua, and Singapore & Regional Chapter Representative – Asia and Pacific at the International Solid Waste Association, will take to the stage and discuss learning from COP28 before exploring how to navigate climate outcomes and the urgent need to plan implementation pathways.

Elsewhere, a dedicated case study on the role of solar energy in improving healthcare in off-grid communities across Africa will be presented, as well as a panel discussion looking at bridging skills gaps for long-term careers in climate.

The Climate and Environment conference is but one of five being delivered at the event in Abu Dhabi, taking a place alongside Solar & Clean Energy; EcoWaste; Water; and Smart Cities. Beyond this, the Summit will also feature three dedicated forums to expand the visitor experience. These include the Green Finance Forum; the eMobility Forum; and an embedded one-day conference on the Pathway to 1.5C, where government ministers will highlight the importance of effective policy frameworks, equitable energy transition, technological innovation, and climate action imperative to achieving net zero future.
