A new socially-conscious UK energy provider has promised to build a solar-powered microgrid in Africa for every 2,000 customers signing up to its service
Brighter World Energy has raised £500,000 in seed capital with the assistance of leading European impact investment bank ClearlySo to provide UK customers with competitive energy tariffs at the same time as addressing Africa's energy crisis.
Cheryl Latham, Brighter World Energy's founder and CEO said, "We're here for those conscious consumers who want a good deal, but also want to use the power of their purchase to do some fundamental good in the world.
"With more than a billion unconnected people around the world, making a simple swich here at home will turn on the lights for villages in Africa for the very first time.
Brighter World says it will offer the average household up to £200 per annum in savings when compared to the standard variable tariffs offered by the UK's 'Big Six' energy providers, as the company seeks to align the need for sustainable energy provision in Africa with strong customer and stakeholder engagement in the UK.
Haylen Collen, investment director at ClearlySo added, "There is a clear correlation between access to energy and inequality.
"Brighter World Energy is helping solve this problem by leveraging the power and consciousness of the British consumer to provide access to clean energy for those who need it most while getting a competitive price for their own fuel.

Manchester-based Brighter World Energy launched at the beginning of October.
