The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) and the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development (ADFD) will provide funds of US$9mn towards the development of a 6MW solar photovoltaic (PV) plant in Freetown, Sierra Leone
Officials from the government of Sierra Leone, said, ”We would like to extend our gratitude to IRENA for coordinating the selection process, the ADFD for extending US$9mn as part funding to the government and the ASIC/OGI that will coordinate an additional US$9mn as private equity.”
The Advanced Science and Innovation Company (ASIC) will oversee the development of 6MW Freetown Solar Park project, which will service urban and western rural districts around the capital.
Kaifala Marah, minister of finance and economic development of Sierra Leone, added that the solar plant would help put the West African nation on the global map of renewable energy and ”further strengthen the existing cordial relationship between the governments of Sierra Leone and the UAE”.
