South African supplier celebrates 1000th diesel engine

MTU South Africa (Pty) Ltd, supplier of engines, complete propulsion and power systems in Southern Africa, delivered the 1000th diesel engine to RSD, a division of DCD DORBYL (Pty) Ltd.

MTU SA together with MTU Friedrichshafen celebrated this milestone at the South African Museum of Military History in Johannesburg.

This engine is used for the RSD towing/mine detection vehicle, the Husky, which is a successful export product in the defense industries. The Husky mine detection and clearance vehicle is produced in South Africa and used successfully by countries such as Canada and the USA to protect troops and vehicle convoys. The MTU 6R106TD20 was selected to equip the new Husky because of MTU’s strong defense orientated maintenance and service team.

“We have a strong working relationship with RSD and we value them as a client. MTU South Africa feels proud and honoured to have supplied their 1000th engine and we look forward to working with them in the future,” says Michael Baumann, Managing Director of MTU South Africa.

The partnership between MTU South Africa and RSD is one that has developed over time. In addition to supplying the engines for RSD, it is the service and reliability of MTU which has made the relationship successful.6R_106_silber_tog_-_lo

“MTU South Africa has been our preferred supplier of engines due to the low maintenance and fuel consumption of their engines. We are very pleased with the quality service received from the staff and look forward to working with them in the future to further build our relationship,” says Andrew Mears, Business Manager Defense for RSD.

The compact MTU 6R106TD20 engine provides the required force of 150 kW at 2200 U/min for the 4x4 vehicle. With this, the vehicle can manage difficult off road terrain and steep hills which is typical in various military situations.
