Energy provider Aggreko has signed a contract with Chad to deliver a 20MW temporary power package in a bid to overcome power shortages in the country
The plant will be fuelled using locally-sourced heavy fuel oil (HFO), providing additional capacity to the local grid that would ensure power supply to the country’s capital N’Djamena, state-owned Société Nationale d’Electricité (SNE) said.
Christophe Jacquin, managing director of Aggreko North and West Africa, said, “By delivering this large-scale, fast-track HFO power solution, we are helping to provide a more consistent and reliable power supply to the people of Chad.”
Djerassem Le Bemadjiel, Chad’s minister of energy, also added that the project would address the power supply issues affecting the Chad capital.
Chad’s power sector currently fulfils 15 per cent of the capital’s consumption needs and covers around 1.5 per cent of national demand, according to a report in Ventures Africa.
Most Chadians continue to use biomass fuels such as wood and animal manure for power.
