TotalEnergies and partners have begun the construction of a 216MW solar plant and accompanying 500MWh battery storage system in the Northern Cape province, South Africa
This follows the Power Purchase Agreement that was signed in November and will supply 75MW of dispatchable power to Eskom, the national utility for South Africa, from 5am to 9:30pm.
The project, which is being developed by a consortium comprising TotalEnergies, Renatile Renewables and Hydra Storage Holding, is expected to supply the national grid for 20 years, providing more than 400GWh per year. Now officially under development with financial close on 12 December, it is expected to come online in 2025.
Vincent Stoquart, senior vice president, Renewables at TotalEnergies, remarked, “Together with our partners, we are pleased to launch this major solar power generation and storage project in South Africa. Thanks to its innovative hybrid design, it will enable us to supply continuous green electricity over a longer period and beyond the hours of sunshine. This project will not only contribute to the country’s energy transition, but also to strengthening the resilience of its power system.”
