Sudan has opened its long-awaited US$1 billion White Nile Sugar factory, which is expected to lift the country out of its current economic decline
Over the next three years, the large refinery is set to reach production levels of 450,000 tonnes of sugar and 60,000 kilolitres of ethanol per annum.
Talking to·Sudan News Agency Suna during the inauguration ceremony yesterday President Omar al-Bashir said, "Sudan will be one of the more significant sugar-exporting countries."
The focus and investment in sugar production comes after Sudan lost 75 per cent of its oil production and in turn its main source of state revenue, after South Sudan gained independence in July 2011.
The Sudanese government plan to boost the country’s economy and quell the growing inflation, which rose to 37 per cent last month, by using sugar production to fill the gap left by the loss of oil.
