China claims its investment in Uganda is worth US$596 million

Chinese ambassador to Uganda, Zhao Yali, has said that Chinese investment in the country was currently worth US$596mn

Yali revealed the figure in an interview with China's official news agency Xinhua with the two countries preparing to mark 50 years of diplomatic ties in November 2012.

The ambassador stated that a total of 256 Chinese firms had opened businesses in Uganda in recent years, creating employment opportunities for more than 28,000 Ugandans.

Yali claimed that the total amount invested in bilateral trade was worth US$400mn and revealed that more investments had been lined up in way of construction of the Kampala Entebbe International Airport Highway, which will commence at the end of 2012.

The Xinhua report also mentioned that the Chinese government had also given assistance to the government of Uganda by building Mandela National Stadium, the ministry of foreign affairs building, the new Government House and an agricultural technology demonstration centre at Kajjansi.
