Ohorongo Cement awarded airport contract in St Helena

Ohorongo Cement has been awarded a three-year contract by South African construction firm, Basil Read, to supply cement for the building of a new international airport on Atlantic island, St Helena

The supply agreement was preceded by a recent on-site visit and inspection of Basil Read engineers to familiarise themselves with the quality and production capacity at the Ohorongo plant near Otjiwarongo.

The Basil Read team returned satisfied that the Ohorongo plant has a capacity to manufacture the required volume of cement to meet all construction needs.

The project is said to include a 1,850-metre-long concrete runway, a taxiway and apron to cater for aircraft up to the size of an Airbus A319-100 and Boeing 737-700. Construction will take an estimated time of four years to complete.

The entire project, together with related logistics, is valued at an estimated NAD 2.5 billion (US$305.50 million).

Sales, marketing and logistics manager at Ohorongo, Johan Burger, said, “Ohorongo is very excited to supply cement for this project and we are very happy that Basil Read has given us this opportunity.”

According to a statement issued by Ohorongo, one of the reasons why Basil Read decided to sign the agreement with the company was due to logistical convenience, which it said would make the process easier.
